For the good of mankind : August Forel and the Bahá'í Faith
Published in Unknown Binding by G. Ronald ()

August Forel's acceptance of the Bahá'í Faith
An interesting short account of the life of this eminent, world-renowned psychiatrist, entomologist, anatomist, social reformer and peace-reformer, Auguste Forel, born in 1848 on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

This account of Forel's life was first written on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Forel's passing (1981).

Throughout his life Forel tried to understand religion, free from dogma and superstition, for he considered that true religion should be for the social good of all mankind. He deplored the fact that there was so much superstition in organized religion. All his life he had believed in the things that Baha'u'llah, founder of the Baha'i Faith, had taught, without realising the source. It was in the last 10 years of his life that he first came across the Baha'i Faith and from then on he wholeheartedly supported it for he recognized it as being the "church of tomorrow". He considered the Baha'i Faith to be the true religion of human social good without dogmas or priests, uniting all men on this small terrestrial globe. In a codicil to his will in 1921 he wrote: "I have become a Baha'i. May this religion live and prosper for the good of mankind; this is my most ardent wish."

On first hearing of the Baha'i Faith Forel corresponded with Abdu'l-Baha, the son of Baha'u'llah, and in reply 'Abdu'l-Baha wrote to him one of the most weighty letters ever written on the subject of philosophy. If ever there was any doubt in academic circles that Auguste Forel was a Baha'i, this study confirms the fact.

From India to the Planet Mars

From India to the Planet Mars
Sonu Shamdasani's insightful preface to Fluornoy's classic study makes this book well worth rereading. The case of Hélène Smith was a hallmark in the early development of modern psychology. This is one of the first scientific studies of mediumship, making it a classic both for students of psychology and for those interested in parapsychology as well. Fluornoy's careful and measured scientific insight combined with his writing style give this work the fascination of a novel and the import of a scientific work.

Handbook of German Business Management
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (December, 1990)
Authors: Erwin Grochla and Eduard Gaugler
Average review score:

Zee one and only German business book you will ever need
Very concise summary of business and management topics from the German perspective. If your attention span is as short as a Sunday comic strip, you will like it.

Each topic is built like Arnold Schwarzenegger: powerful, yet compact and scientifically engineered with a distinct German accent. The bad side; the subjects are told with the same amount of humor as Arnold displayed in "Conan the Barbarian".
The Germans have a knack for maintaining the discipline of getting to the academic bottomline without starting to ramble. But this did not come easy: The beginning editor, Professor Grochla either died or retired or both during the process and it took more than 10 years to complete the books, sort of a biblical comparison.

Amazing breadth of related topics.

Not for how-to fans, browsing the mall bookstore for get-rich-quick recipes, but an excellent reference, especially for students of the subject who don't want to look through tons of books, but prefer one-stop-knowledge shopping. Sort of the business book version of the Kelloggs variety pack. $250 seems kind of pricey, but think of all the other business administration and management books you don't have to buy anymore...

Good-looking but hard to lug
Insight's City Guides combine stunning photography with literate text and a smattering of basic travel information. The Insight Venice guide is worth adding to your bookshelf, but its practical advice is getting a bit long in the tooth and its heft makes it less than ideal as a take-along guide. - Durant Imboden, Venice for Visitors, http://govenice.miningco.co

Kunstmuseum Winterthur : das Museumsgebäude 1915 von Rittmeyer & Furrer : der Erweiterungsbau 1995 von Gigon & Guyer
Published in Unknown Binding by Das Museum ()
Average review score:

The new extension meets the old museum
It is a difficult task to build an extension for an old museum. But gigon and guyer made a good work in this project. The Kunstmuseum Winterthur museum has got an extension recently for their collections. This fantastic book shows the content of the old museum, the facade, the plans, sections and elevations of the old building. After showing the treasure of the old architecture, the modern extension appears which is a contrast to the old one. The book contains a lot of black and white photos of the new and old part of the museum and also the collections in the museum. The architectural drawings in this book are clear and large enough for studying. Being an architectural student, i found this book very useful for studying architecture by Swiss architects.

Le Canada et les Suisses, 1604-1974
Published in Unknown Binding by âEditions universitaires ()
Author: Émile Henri Bovay
Average review score:

A Swiss Interlude in Canada
This book specifically deals with Swiss contributions to Manitoba. The author, E.H. Bovay, has done some excellent research. Especially strong is his background on the Red River Colony from 1813-1826 as well as his background on the Swiss boy artist, Peter Rindisbacher, who lived in that colony from 1821-1826 and is most often referred to as the "First Artist of Western Canada". Although resembling more a "coffee table" book, it has a surprisingly high level of academic background along with the wonderful reproductions of some of Peter Rindisbacher's finest paintings.

Letters of Francis A. Schaeffer
Published in Hardcover by Good News Pub (September, 1985)
Author: Lane Dennis
Average review score:

For anyone who wanted a pastor to listen....
Francis Schaeffer does not produce much among the "light reading" category. This book is refreshingly different than his others in that you catch a glimpse of the man behind the mind. It's subject matter focuses on specific advice/counseling for people that have written questions ranging from organized religion to intimacy in marriage and friendship. The "letters" have been compiled over 30 years ('53-'83) from individuals that had written to Schaeffer. They are categorized into three sections: 1) The Reawakening of Spiritual Reality, 2) Spiritual Reality in Daily Living, 3) Spiritual Reality in Marriage, Family and Sexual Relations. His answers are biblical, humble...always personal. In a day when radio and even church counseling resembles a fast food chain...(hasty & premature answers), this book provides an ear that truly listens to those seeking guidance.

Mars
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (December, 1981)
Authors: Fritz Zorn and Robert & Rita Kimber (Translators)
Average review score:

Fritz Zorn, or "The man who never got a traffic fine".
I have read "Mars" ; much could be sayed, but over all, I think Fritz Zorn it is a perfect exponent of the politically correct: perhaps therefore it was mentally ill and died of cancer. Son of an accommodated family from Switerland, one of the richest nations on earth, where until the trains and villages seems as perfect scale models in large. But Zorn couldn' t love anybody. He explains how he visited Spain - my country - dressed with his impeccable Blazer jacket and was astonished by the spontaneity and the exuberance of life of a Catholic and less developed country. He returned to his natal Switerland. (Someone knows the name of the president of the Helvetic Confederation?). Unfortunately, Fritz Zorn was a stranger yet in his own country, in the kingdom of what is convenient -a deadly middle class-; his body don't resisted these lethal society and he contracted a cancer that not even the highly advanced helvetic medicine could cure. But before he die, he had an a solely act of vitality and rebellioussness and wrote this book. I think it isn' t a masterpiece of style, but in this time of best -sellers is quite good. Poor, rich, polite and correct Fritz Zorn: rest in peace!
